Mabel is looking for a Home

Rachel

Children? yes, potentially

Dogs? yes

Cats? no

Other animals? yes as long as kept separate

Able to be left? yes, with canine company up to a couple of hours; if no other dogs, would need to be built up

Mabel is a 3 year old Frenchie who is currently in foster in Jersey.

Mabel really is a sweetheart. She's generally bubbly and happy and loves nothing more than to be with you. That said, she's not a fan of being carried, and has particular views on strangers trying to hold her!! If she doesn't know you, she's surprisingly squirmy and will get out of your arms, having taken great offence. Once she knows you, she's not delighted to be carried, but will tolerate it. If you sit down , she'll be up on your lap or lie alongside you. She does get very attached to her human- something that's something of a trait with the breed.

Mabel has enjoyed visiting a care home on numerous occasions, giving pleasure to many. She has been as equally tolerant and patient with young children. She could easily become a PAT or therapy dog. Subject to appropriate considerations and introductions, she could be homed with children.

Out on walks, Mabel walks beautifully on the lead and doesn't pull. She doesn't appreciate being sworn at by other dogs (do any of us!) She is however happy to walk away with her human. She has shown a good recall in her foster home, so subject to an appropriate settling period, there is no reason why she couldn't be walked off lead. However, given Mabel's breed, she's not a girl that will thrive playing ball or going for a run with you. A gentle stroll is far more her thing.

As said above, Mabel, in common with many of this breed, does get very attached to her human, and initially didn't like being left behind. Her foster home has worked hard on this, and with some canine company, she can now be left for short periods in a car (weather dependent!) or at home. She would not however be suited to being left all day while her owners were at work. If she is homed as an only dog, she will take longer to get used to being left and may always struggle.

Mabel is generally house trained now, with approximately 95% success. If it's raining outside this does need careful management!

Her ears are sadly permanently damaged from untreated infections but won't need any ongoing treatment. A new home should watch for in case any further infections occur and quickly see a vet if so to avoid any further damage. She also has pulled her back while being in foster (another breed trait!) so steps to the sofa and other simple tweaks to her home set up is a must. She is currently breathing well but this will need assessment in the summer months - if she does need BOAS surgery, JRD will cover this cost at their vet.
